YOU HAVE A FERRARI AND YOU ALWAYS START IN 6TH GEAR?
Okay, let's chat. You've got a beautiful electric bike with a mid-drive motor, the cream of the crop. But there's one little detail I need to share with you, to prevent your drivetrain from dying faster than a bag of chips at a garage party.
You know that last little 10 or 11-tooth cog on the back? The one that makes you feel like you can fly? That's not the one you'd use to pull away from a standstill or climb a hill. It's for cruising speed, not acceleration. If you use it to launch like a lion, with the assistance maxed out, you'll put your chain and cassette through hell. Like medieval torture.
But wait, there's worse:
Some ride at moderate speed on the 11-tooth cog, with a super low cadence and the assistance in the carpet.
That's like doing a bench press with your arms fully extended and asking your buddy to add two 45-pound plates. You push and push... and something eventually gives way.
The mid-drive motor doesn't care about your pace. It pushes. Hard. And if it's pushing while your legs are barely turning, well, that's when the transmission gets ripped apart. The result:
- rapid wear,
- chain that jumps,
- 11-tooth gear which is good for bins in a short time
- and a mechanic who sighs silently while he replaces all that for you.
The secret?
Keep your legs spinning! A good cadence (like 80-90 RPM) is what your engine loves. It's what your drivetrain loves. And it's what will allow you to enjoy your bike for a long time without having to come see us every two weeks.
And if you have any doubts? Come see us. We'll take a look at it together. It's better to ask a question than to replace transmission parts unnecessarily.
